Hotel Port Royal Quebec Review

Looking for a great hotel in Old Quebec just feet from the cruise port? Take a look at my Hotel Port Royal Quebec review from a recent pre-cruise stay.

I was in need of a pre-cruise hotel with very specific requirements. I wanted to be close to the cruise port, easy walking to restaurants and shops as well as the Chateau. Additionally, I needed it to be dog friendly as well as having a crib or cot available for my baby.

Hotel Port Royal Quebec was exactly what we needed and would be my go-to to enjoy the Old Port of Quebec City.

Hotel Port-Royal Quebec Review

For me this was the perfect pre-cruise hotel. It could be so much more than a pre-cruise hotel though with an incredible location and great amenities like kitchenettes, an on-site restaurant, laundry facilities, and being pet friendly.

Overall:
My Rating – 🌟 9.5/10
Hotels.com Rating – 🌟 9.4/10

Highlights: Location, kitchenette, can bring pets, friendly staff
Not quite ideal: Limited on-site parking ($), can be a bit expensive

Room Review

The Deluxe and Deluxe Plus rooms are the only rooms that are pet friendly. These are all on the floor above ground level (second floor for the U.S. readers, first floor if you are Quebec or European).

This room was a great size – had dog dishes already out, as well as a pack-n-play style crib for my baby, one king sized bed as well as a queen sized murphy bed, large bathroom with incredible rain shower as well as a well stocked kitchenette.

It was well set up and comfortable for our rather unusual travel party – myself, my mom, my baby, and my mom’s dog, Mia.

Bathroom

The bathroom was quite large. Done in black marble it had a chic and modern look. It never felt too dark as it was well lit and a big bonus as the lights were also on dimmers so you could leave a light on just a little bit overnight.

The rain shower was absolute luxury. The shower was very large with glass wall and had great water pressure, plus additional shower heads and a built in shelf.

There were the standard included bath amenities like shampoo and body wash.

Kitchenette and Extras

There was also an excellent kitchenette with cooktop, refrigerator, microwave, coffee station, complete with pots and pans and dishes. I appreciated thoughtful items like a can opener and cork screw as well above what you’d expect.

There was also a generous closet with a safe and iron/ironing board. The Hotel Port Royal is definitely somewhere you could enjoy for a longer stay with these great in-room additions.

Location

The view from our room at night. There are quite a few restaurants nearby and there was live music as well.
From the other side of the building. This is the side facing towards the water.

Hotel Port-Royal Quebec is located just a couple blocks in from the water and is just below the hill the Chateau is on. It’s very close to Notre-Dame Cathedral as well. It’s quite easy to find while driving as it’s right off the main road.

It is also incredibly close to the cruise port. This was a main selling point for us as my daughter and I were going on a cruise the next day. This made it easy for the morning joining the ship.

A 4 minute walk to the cruise port is not an exaggeration.

Parking

There are two parking lots available on-site as well as off-street parking.

Parking at the hotel is a bit more of a challenge. They have two small private parking lots. However, if you arrive late these lots might be full. Parking is also $25 CAD per day.

If you do get there late you may have to do on-street parking. We had to do this and it was honestly not an issue. There’s quite a bit of space for on-street parking. There is an app to use to pay for this that you’ll need to download. The hotel does have free Wi-Fi so if you don’t have service or international cell phone coverage you can connect to that to download the app.

If we hadn’t found the spot we did on the street the parking could have been a challenge. It did take us twice around the block to figure out where we were going to park.

The staff at the reception desk was also helpful and if we hadn’t found a place had a few good suggestions as it seems that the parking lots they have fill up pretty regularly. This is one of the few potential negatives of the property.

⚡ Electric charging ports are available in the parking lot in front of the hotel.

Louise Restaurant

There is a restaurant on site that serves breakfast lunch and dinner. Some of the room rates will include breakfast, so be on the look out for that option.

We had both breakfast and dinner through the restaurants. For dinner we actually had it “room service”. They do not officially offer room service, but if you order from the restaurant they will bring it up to your room for you. You can also bring drinks back from the restaurant/bar to your room without issue.

Both meals were delicious. While they were a bit pricey, it was not overly pricey for the area the hotel is in or for the quality of the food that you got. The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice, very “hip” feeling but without being too full of itself. Definitely worth a try even if you aren’t staying at the hotel.

Pets

It was so much fun to see so many dogs! There is a $25 CAD pet fee per night that they charge. They provide dog dishes.

There are a few spots with grass not too far from the hotel entrance and for a longer walk there are a couple parks not far away.

Make sure to put it in the booking ahead of time and be aware you can only have pets in their deluxe or deluxe plus rooms.

Dogs were not allowed in the restaurant even on the patio so we had to sign a waiver and then she was able to stay in the room while we went to breakfast.

Traveling with Babies

The bed to the right is actually a murphy bed. I slept on that one and it was quite comfortable.

On this stay I had my baby with me. I’d put it in the booking requesting a cot. It was a pack n’ play style crib. They didn’t have any pack n’play sheets though but I had brought my own so not a big deal. I should note that I also didn’t ask the front desk and my guess is they would’ve provided some for us. But, I had one with me and it was late so just used our own.

They hadn’t yet set it up but the super helpful front desk staff had offered to have someone come set it up. Overall I would say great experience. I was cruising with my baby the next day and you can read about all my tips and tricks for cruising with a baby here.

Pre-/Post- Cruise

The Hotel Port-Royal is a great pre or post cruise hotel in Quebec. It’s location can’t be beat. It’s convenience to the ship and walking distance to so much of what the city has to offer, plus room and on-site amenities make this a great option.

The front desk will also hold your luggage for you if you arrive before your room is ready making it easy for a disembarkation day from the ship.

Value

Compared to other hotels in the area it a bit more expensive, but not wildly. When you add on the extra charges for parking and for the pet fee it does start to get somewhat costly. In the winter the prices are in the $120-$180 per night range. In the summer though you can expect to pay $280-$300 per night (USD).

While I didn’t mind paying this much because it offered so much value to our family and wanting to be next to the port, it is still a lot for a hotel stay.
