Cruises
I love cruising! I’ve been cruising for almost 25 years on seven cruise lines to five continents and over seventy countries.
I originally started cruising with my mom as a kid. She found it to be a fun way to travel with myself and my brother. Kids programs for us to have fun with shows and lounges for her to enjoy. Cruising can be for everyone in every walk of life and every budget.
Why Do I Love Cruises?
A lot of why I initially fell in love with cruising was how inclusive being onboard was. Even on fairly basic cruise, there is a lot included. Yes, some lines over the years have started to nickel and dime a bit more, but all in all it is still an excellent value for your vacation dollars. On the menu in the main dining room you could (and still can) find lobster and other delicacies (and let’s be honest, things that are super expensive to order and try at a restaurant on land) without extra cost. I could try escargot and not worry about the price tag accompanying it. It was a great opportunity for me to try new foods.
Onboard you could go see the show without paying extra and it didn’t matter if you were in a small inside cabin or in the largest suite, you all could go to the gym or the pool. It felt like aside from which cabin you had in the evenings this was the closest thing to a classless society. Ironically when I went to work on the crew side I realized that position is ranked and has different corresponding privileges.
More reasons than I can count. The big ones are:
- Travel
- It’s a great opportunity to get a taste of a lot of different parts of the world.
- Cruises go to all corners of the world.
- Affordable
- This might surprise people, but cruising is incredibly affordable for what is included. I love that there aren’t price tags (for the most part) on menus.
- Being at Sea
- There is something about being out on the wide open ocean that feels so peaceful I can’t hardly explain it.
- Lots of Options
- There are so many different types of cruises that means there is really a cruise and cruise line for everyone.
Cruise Restart 2021
The cruise ship restart of 2021 is now well underway. It didn’t always seem like it was going to happen though. CDC regulations, vaccination requirements, oh, and the pandemic have all made this restart seem impossible at various points. It’s happening though and it’s great. Take a look below at some posts about the restart.
Wondering when cruises are restarting this year? Me, too. That’s why I made a giant spreadsheet of it all. This years restart is a bit confusing to keep track of, but hopefully the calendars help. Enjoy!
Cruising to Alaska is back! There are several cruise lines at different price points resuming cruising from Seattle roundtrip. Take a look at this rundown to understand which ships and cruise lines are starting and when.
Cruising is making a comeback. Take a look at this initial rundown of announcements about cruising restart.
Where Do Cruise Ships Go?
It feels like there’s a misconception that cruises go to the Caribbean and Alaska and that’s basically it. For those that grew up watching The Love Boat maybe they know that cruises even go to the Mexican Riviera.
For those that think cruising is just a North American thing though – cruises go to all seven continents and literally hundreds of countries! Cruising has taken me around the world and they can take you around the world, too.
I’ve climbed the Great Wall of China, swam with lemon sharks in Bora Bora, fed kangaroos in Australia, looked for the Holy Grail in Petra, marveled at St. Peter’s Basilica, helicoptered onto a glacier in Alaska, walked through a lava tube in Hawaii, and so much more.
Take a look at these posts below talking about just some of the incredible places around the world that cruises can take you!
In this post I go through the alphabet – from A to Z – of places around the world that I have been by way of cruise ship. Explore the world with me!
The number of places you can explore without having to fly away from the continental US is astounding. Take a look at the best cruise destinations to visit from the United States – it’s a long list. Enjoy!
Alaska is one of my favorite places to cruise. Not all Alaskan cruises are the same and they’re not the right cruise for everyone. Take a look at this “how-to” guide to help you find the right Alaskan cruise for you.
World Cruises will often go all the way around the world – with some lasting up to six months. Have you ever wanted to see the world while only unpacking your suitcase once? This could be the trip of a lifetime for you. This is the page for all your World Cruise questions!
Things to Know
There is so much to know about cruising! From what to pack to the food, and various fun visa related things, there’s a lot to it. Take a look at these posts talking about a variety of things to know about cruising.
This cruise ship dining guide will take you through the different cruise lines, what their dining protocols are, what’s included, how many restaurants, dress codes, etc.
Thinking of flying to your cruise the day it leaves? That might not be the best idea. Take a look at 5 reasons to fly to the ship day(s) in advance.
Luxury cruising is an incredible (truly incredible) experience. In this post we take a look at whether or not it’s worth it – and whether or not it might be right for you.
I can’t recommend luxury cruising enough but it’s not for everyone and depending on what you like in a cruise it might not be worth the money.
The Jones Act – the PVSA – the lovely piece of legislation that completely complicates cruising from the United States. In this post we break down what it means and how it affects cruisers.
Have a food allergy? Hey, me too! I’ve been cruising for nearly 25 years and traveling even longer. In this post I discuss the top 7 tricks I’ve found to traveling with a food allergy.
