Tips for Picking the Right Transatlantic Cruise

1. Onboard amenities and vibe of the ship/cruise line is important. You’re going to have a lot of time at sea!
2. Go the right time of year for your adventure! Most crossings go west to east (Americas to Europe) in the spring and east to west (Europe to Americas) in the fall
3. A good deal – always wanted to try a luxury cruise or maybe a suite? Take advantage of discounted pricing.

Best Transatlantic Cruise Itineraries

The itinerary for a transatlantic cruise seems pretty simple, right? You’re just crossing an ocean after all. Go from point A to B.

There are so many different options for these itineraries though – sailing from the Americas from places as far ranging as Quebec City all the way south to Buenos Aires and heading to a huge variety of ports in Europe including England, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Portugal and more.

We’re going to dive into some great and interesting itineraries to show you there is more to a transatlantic voyage than all of those sea days.

While quite a few transatlantic cruises are actually repositioning cruises, they are all still adventures unto themselves and cruise lines have really worked to spice up these itineraries!

The Best itineraries:

9. Best Traditional (Also Shortest):

Cunard, Queen Mary 2
Southampton ➡️ New York City
7 Nights, many sailings
From $619 per person

The most classic voyage available on the only ocean liner still sailing.

10. Best for Families

Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas
Barcelona ➡️ Port Canaveral (Orlando)
13 Nights, July 26, 2026
From $1,399 per person

This was a tough decision against the Disney Fantasy and another sailing on Harmony of the Seas, but this crossing won out because it’s in the summer time. Looking at needing to get away for 2 weeks is tough if you’re battling school calendars, and considering how few transatlantics there are in the summer this set this voyage apart.

Harmony of the Seas (as well as the Disney Fantasy) also have splash pads available for babies and nurseries as well for the youngest cruisers. For families this is a great choice for kids of all ages. Plus, with all of those sea days you might actually get try everything there is to do onboard.

11. Best for those Wary of the Seas

Norwegian Cruise Line, Norwegian Escape
🌊 ⭐ Only 3 sea days in a row!!!! ⭐ 🌊
New York City ➡️ Barcelona
16 Nights, September 26, 2026
From $1,735 per person
Click here to check current pricing

This transatlantic crossing cruise only has 3 sea days in a row to make it all the way across an ocean. That’s incredible and the absolute best option out there for someone wary of the seas. An added bonus is the rest of the itinerary is also gorgeous with some great ports in Canada, followed by Spain, Portugal, and Gibraltar.

12. Best for the Caribbean

MSC Cruises, MSC Seaside
Barcelona, Spain ➡️ Miami, Florida
19 Nights, October 28, 2025
From $959 per person
Click here to check current prices

This cruise starts in Barcelona and ends with a great bit of Caribbean fun including stops in Barbados, Grenada, St. Maarten, and Puerto Rico before ending in Miami. Plus, it’s at a great price at just over $50 per person per day.

13. Best for Luxury

Regent Seven Seas, Seven Seas Mariner
⭐ Great value for this luxury line
Barcelona, Spain ➡️ Miami
14 Nights, November 26, 2025
From $4,030 per person

This was a tough decision as there is also a Seabourn cruise with an interesting itinerary ending with some island hopping in the Caribbean. However, it’s priced $800 more for the two week cruise than this Regent Seven Seas option and the ports with the Seabourn itinerary – or Seabourn (though I do love them) don’t equal out that extra $800 per person.

14. Best for the US

Oceania Cruises, Vista
Southampton, England ➡️ Miami
22 Nights, June 14, 2026
From $10,349 per person

I hate to say it but realistically there is no great option for a transatlantic that also features good US exploration. They just aren’t really out there. If you’re interested in a Atlantic Coast style cruise check out these options here.

15. Best for the North Atlantic

Princess Cruises, Sapphire Princess
Copenhagen, Denmark ➡️ Boston, Massachusetts
15 Nights, August 19, 2026
From $1,496 per person

Visiting the British Isles including Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and Ireland, this cruise really gives the feel of the North Atlantic. Following the British Isles exploration comes the crossing and then a few ports in Canada including Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

16. Best for South America

MSC Cruises, MSC Preziosa
Santos, Brazil ➡️ Vigo, Spain
18 Nights, April 2, 2026
From $1,347 per person

With 5 ports in South America before crossing to Europe this cruise gives you a great tase of South America.

The Best Crossings for the People That Don’t Like To Be Way Out to Sea

If a Transatlantic Crossing has just too many sea days in a row – These are the best itineraries for you:

Some people are a bit squeamish about being all the way out in the open ocean or they can’t fathom having seven sea days in a row.

There are a few ways to cross the Atlantic that break up the crossing into more manageable sections. Four days at sea in a row feels a lot less daunting than seven.

The three basic routes to make this work are:

  • From Florida/southern US and then stopping in both Bermuda and the Azores
  • Crossing the Northern Atlantic and stopping in Iceland – usually with Halifax either before or after
  • Crossing from South America to Cape Verde off the coast of Africa

Bonus Route:

  • Northern Atlantic plus Ponta Delgada. There is one itinerary in particular that crosses from Ponta Delgada to Halifax, Nova Scotia resulting in only 3 days at sea in a row!

These are each such different experiences but I love how these itineraries are popping up – it is great for the guests but also for the crew! As a former crew member I can tell you seven sea days in a row, especially in guest facing positions is a lot.

Traditional Transatlantic Crossing:
Cunard Queen Mary 2

No conversation about transatlantic voyages would be complete without mentioning Cunard and their classic transatlantic crossing on the iconic Queen Mary 2.

Queen Mary 2 regularly offers crossings between New York City and Southampton, England. These crossings take 7, 8, or 9 days depending on the season and direction.

The best “low” price for these tends to be around $900-$1,000 for an inside cabin.

However, every once in awhile there is a last minute deal like this one for $619 per person on the May 5, 2025 crossing.

FAQ’s:

Which side of the ship is best for a transatlantic cruise?

The good news is with a transatlantic cruise there is not really a best side of the ship. Unlike some places where one side of the ship will be seeing beautiful scenery and the other is looking out at ocean on a transatlantic cruise pretty much everyone is just looking at ocean.

With that being said though, depending on which direction you are going one side of the ship may get more sun or get the sunrise versus the sunset.

For instance if you are heading northeast – meaning from say Florida to Portugal – the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so the starboard side would get more of the sunrise and the port side would get more of the sunset.

Or if you are heading from Europe towards the US or maybe even South America the starboard side would potentially get the sunset with the port side getting the sunrise.

What is the best month for a transatlantic cruise?

It depends on what you are looking for in a transatlantic cruise. In regards to weather, if you are heading towards Florida and the Caribbean, avoiding hurricane season would be advisable – so October might not be the best choice.

But, when the best month for a transatlantic cruise also depends on when they are offered. Most west (Americas) to east (Europe) crossings are in the spring and most east (Europe) to west (Americas) crossings are in the fall.

The Queen Mary 2 does offer quite a few crossings throughout the year outside of these typical repositioning cruises, and over the summer there are a few that will do the North Atlantic through Iceland and such.

While the summer may be best for weather, as long as you avoid deep hurricane season for Floridas and the Caribbean and the winter months for the North Atlantic (New York and such) you should have reasonably okay weather.

Should I take a transatlantic cruise east or west?

There are arguments both ways but going from Europe to the Americas is my preferred because

  • you get extra sleep! All of your time changes will be getting you an extra hour of sleep at night meaning your well rested when you get home
  • Can do the “go-go-go” of exploring Europe and then relax with all of those lovely sea days on the way home.

What is the shortest transatlantic cruise?

The shortest transatlantic cruises offered are from Cunard sailing on the Queen Mary 2 from Southampton to New York City (and vice versa) at 7 days long. There are no additional port stops on this voyage.

There You Have It: The Best Transatlantic Cruises

Who knew there were so many options to crossing the Atlantic! Gone are the days that to cross the Atlantic you just go from A to B. Now, cruise lines are really looking into and incorporating so many incredible destinations along the way.
