North Hero House Inn & Restaurant Review
For an early Mother’s Day present my mom and I went to the North Hero House Inn & Restaurant for a little overnight stay-cation. The North Hero House Inn & Restaurant has become among my favorite staycation locations in Vermont. The inn is located in North Hero, Vermont beautifully nestled in the Champlain Islands. If you like waking up to the sounds of water lapping against the dock, eating delicious food, and enjoying local charm this inn could be a great place for you. This North Hero House Inn & Restaurant review is based not just on our early Mother’s Day getaway, but also several other times I’ve stay there over the past few years.

Located on the Champlain Islands also allows easy access for those traveling from say Montreal to Boston. For those looking at any Canada/New England cruises in the coming years this could be a great stop if you wanted to make your cruise a round-trip journey. This could be especially wonderful if you timed it to see some of Vermont’s famous fall foliage.
The North Hero House Inn has been operating as an inn since 1891, and while it has grown throughout that time it has certainly maintained it’s charm.
What Are The Rooms at the North Hero House Inn Like?:
The Inn is spread out over four buildings. Each building offers slightly different accommodations, though most include a lake view and a good majority have some sort of screened in porch. There are some suites available, too.
The rooms are all tastefully decorated. Some rooms have a bit of a theme – for instance one room we’ve stayed in plays off of Vermont’s agricultural heritage and features some cows. The rooms all have a bit of a classic New England Inn feel and decor combined with fun little extras.
Most rooms include a mini-fridge and many even have small electric fireplaces. For the summer months there are wall-unit air conditioners for guest use. The air conditioners – as are the case with that kind of air conditioner – are a bit noisy, but they certainly get the humidity out of the air and anyone that has stayed in Vermont in the summer knows that sometimes that is crucial for a good nights sleep.
How Comfy are the Beds in the North Hero House Rooms?
There are rooms with different configurations. Some rooms have two beds where as others have one king or queen sized bed. If you call to make your reservation they can advise with which kind of bed configuration it is. They also have a couple rooms that are connected by a doorway. The above room is actually connected to a king sized bed room next door.
The beds are comfy. Are they the absolute best beds I’ve ever slept in? No. Are they as comfy as the mattress on a Seabourn Cruise? No. Are they decent mattresses that you’ll get a good night sleep on? Absolutely. There are also usually a variety of additional blankets available to help you find your ideal temperature and the sheets are decent quality and comfortable.
All rooms include an en-suite. Some are small with a shower stall, others are so fancy to include jetted jacuzzi tubs. These bathrooms include a collection of nice toiletries (nothing too fancy, but certainly nice enough), and nice towels.
Additional fun amenities include a small Keurig coffee maker. There are several K-cups in the room; however, they don’t have tea in the rooms. However, there are tea bags available in the main building if you just ask. If you’re like me and are a tea drinker versus coffee I would just ask for a couple upon check-in so you have them ready to enjoy that early morning sunrise on the porch in your jammies.
Other fun and thoughtful amenities include hammocks on some of the screened in porches as well as some throw blankets to stay warm on the chilly evenings.
While I have noticed that the screened in porches make taking some pictures from the porch challenging, in the summer in Vermont mosquitos and bugs are certainly a problem. These porches and their screens are well-maintained to ensure bug-free lake front enjoyment.
The Grounds:
This is not some grand resort – there isn’t a spa, nor is there a pool. However, there is the absolutely breathtaking natural beauty of Lake Champlain right in front of you. Adirondack chairs are located throughout the property to enjoy taking in the views of the lake. There is also a shuffleboard court, and in the summertime some small boats available for use on the lake.
The North Hero House Restaurant:
The Restaurant at North Hero House Inn is lovely. There is some seating looking out on the lake but the main portion of the dining room is located further back within the main building of the inn. There is of course something nice about sitting and eating overlooking the lake, but the dining room is tastefully decorated and perfectly nice as well.
The main North Hero House Restaurant and bar is located in the main building on the ground floor. There is also a bar located down by the water that is open throughout the summer months, primarily on weekends.
The restaurant is (usually during non-COVID times) open for breakfast (or brunch) and dinner. The restaurant is open to the public as well as guests of the Inn. While breakfast is included in your stay, dinner is not. I’ve found the dinner menu to be lovely, but the quality of the food comes with a price tag. It’s not inexpensive but is absolutely delicious. It is also worth signing up for their mailing list because sometimes they have a special that includes your stay and dinner. This was the case for Mother’s Day and what prompted me to order the delicious seafood risotto.
What Is Near the Inn?:
The Inn isn’t in the middle of nowhere, it’s just on the edge of a giant lake in a small town. There is no giant bustling city to walk to, but the sounds of the lake lapping against the pier is tranquil enough to make up for it. Nearby there is a large general store where you can buy snacks, sandwiches, and about a million little random things. This is a general store that has a bit of everything. Snow Farm vineyard is not too far away and does tastings. You can also buy a bottle and then bring it back to the Inn to enjoy in some adirondack chairs looking over the lake and the aforementioned Adirondacks.
Overall Review of North Hero House Inn & Restaurant:
This is not necessarily the least expensive place to stay. There are deals if you sign up for their mailing list and there are deals if you stay mid-week. The rooms themselves I think are very reasonably priced and for the market the restaurant is priced accordingly as well. It’s all well worth it though. The people working there are nice, the rooms are comfortable, and the view is phenomenal.
I’ve loved staying at the North Hero House Inn & Restaurant. For me it is a wonderful staycation, for another it could be a great weekend away or a great stop on the way from Montreal to Boston wanting to get a bit of a taste of Vermont. It’s not that far of a drive out of the way and provides tranquility and comfort to enjoy stunning Lake Champlain.
