What is Onboard Credit?

Onboard credit is money put onto your onboard account while on a cruise. Cruise lines operate on a cashless system onboard their ships, with each guest having an onboard account.

Onboard credit is money in that onboard account.

That credit can then be used to buy things onboard such as drinks, shore excursions and more.

Is onboard credit free?

When people discuss onboard credit, they’re typically meaning money that you’ve gotten for free into this account as a bonus or a benefit.

You can have money in this onboard account that you’ve added yourself, for instance if you were to deposit cash into your onboard account. However, that’s not a “credit”.

If you go onto a cruise lines website you might get a pop-up asking for you to sign up with your name and email address, sometimes these will come with an offer to get a discount on an upcoming cruise or some onboard credit. Here are a few that I’ve found.

A price change for your cruise

If you notice that the price for your cruise has gone down since you booked you may be able to get the difference issued to you as onboard credit. If you worked with a travel agent they could try to negotiate this on your behalf, otherwise call the cruise line directly and see what they can do.

Early Booking Bonuses

Cruise lines want you to sign up for your cruise early. It’s better for them to have the ship mostly filled up as soon as possible, so they often offer early booking bonuses to encourage guests to book.

Here’s some cruise lines early booking bonuses and onboard credit offers. These change frequently and are often dependent on your specific cruise, so check with your travel advisor or the cruise line directly for what your sailing might qualify for.

Cruise Line Credit Cards

Most cruise lines will have an associated credit card with it. These cards in general don’t reward you with as many points as many travel credit cards will. However, they do have some sign-on bonuses once you’ve spent a certain amount, usually within the first 90 days, that can be valuable.

The majority of cards offer either 20,000 or 30,000 bonus points, redeemable for $200 or $300 onboard credit on your next cruise.

Here’s a super quick overview:

Do I have to spend all of my onboard credit?

Absolutely not. You don’t have to spend all of it but most of the time whatever you don’t spend is forfeited.

Best bet, if you find yourself with a little extra at the end of the cruise, you could always go to the shops and even just buy some candy and give it to the crew. Or get a t-shirt. Don’t overthink it when you’ve got extras at the end.

Onboard credit FAQ’s

I’ve found out I have onboard credit. Is that charged to my credit card?

No. That can be confusing if you get a notification from the cruise line or your travel advisor that you’ve had onboard credit added to your account. This does not get charged to your credit card. It’s applied to your onboard account to be used for onboard purchases or experiences like the spa or shore excursions.

Is it the maximum amount I can spend on the cruise?

Nope and the cruise line likes it that way. As long as you can pay it at the end of the cruise, you can spend it. Whether that is on a credit card or not and whether it puts you into huge debt is up to you.

Can onboard credit be used for drinks?
