Accountability/Where Are We Going: October 2020

Happy almost Halloween. The extent of our Halloween festivities has been watching Halloween-ish movies. We watched The ‘Burb’s (ad) last night (available on Starz free trial), a lovely (relatively ridiculous) ’80’s flick starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. We watched Ghostbusters and Hubie Halloween. And, as I am not that into Halloween (I think it has something to do so much candy having nuts and peanuts in it) I watched a sort of Christmas themed rom-com yesterday.

Accountability:
At the beginning of this year I had given myself some goals. As this year has turned from normal into the absolute pile of COVID-ick that it is, my goals have shifted and adjusted. I’m getting back into some quantifiable goals though to carry me through the next couple months:

Ship friends/land friends!
  • Finish at least one online course per month. I have currently been doing courses on Coursera. They have a nice mix of courses you can get a certificate for, courses that you can take for free but then not get a certificate, and courses that are completely free.
Note: If you use that link to register an account I will receive compensation at no expense to you.
  • Read one book per month. While I would love to be supporting my local bookstores, shipping to the UK is quite expensive, and thus I have been reading a lot on my Kindle (ad)
  • Post at least 10 blog posts each month
  • Video chat with at least one friend per week (last week we had a big multi-person video chat!)
  • Keep in touch with family.
  • Get a press handstand – super random fitness/gymnastics goal. You can blame this on 31 year old, mom of two, previous Olympian Chellsie Memmel who is making a comeback and is pretty darn awesome.
  • Take a French lesson every once in awhile

For this month I have done okay on these goals and managed to complete nearly every one of them. I didn’t finish a book though, rather I started two. If they end up being any good I’ll let you know.

Where Are We Going?:
Nowhere. Apparently no one is going anywhere.

Our cruise line has a start-up date of December 15th listed on their website, but I don’t know how realistic any of that is. Truthfully I don’t really think it will happen. And, no, we still don’t have any idea when Stuart is going back to work and we don’t know when we will find out. Each week it seems like maybe we’ll find out the next, and then it comes and goes with no word. Given – as he was onboard for 6 months, he might end up being off the ship for 6 months as well, so it could still be awhile.

For travel over here I had lovely ideas of going up north, staying on a loch and maybe seeing if Nessie was around. Scotland has announced increased COVID restrictions starting on Monday based on what area you live in and how many cases there are. We will be in tier 3 it looks like, so unfortunately the loch will have to wait.

Once again, for the people that think that COVID is just happening in the United States and is a product of political bullsh*t – this is a worldwide pandemic. I am currently in a country across the ocean from the US and we have to wear masks everywhere and we can’t go inside friends houses for dinner and all sorts of things to try to slow the spread of it down and prevent more people from dying or from getting it and having adverse long term health issues. This is real, it is worldwide. Stop fear mongering political conspiracies.

And, while in a normal year I would love to fly back to the United States for Thanksgiving, that is not going to happen this year. A two week quarantine upon arriving in the US and another two week quarantine on the way back, plus increased cases all around mean that we will do our best to make a little mini-Thanksgiving dinner over here just for the two of us. 🙂 Or, I suppose we could go to a friends house and eat outside?

In other unexciting and generally whompy news we’ve found out that spouse benefits for sailing onboard (for me referred to as Wife-On-Board) have been suspended until December of next year. I’m hopeful that when ships eventually start sailing again it will get reinstated, but that means that for at least Stuart’s next two contracts we will be apart for at least three months at a time. The good news is that we are getting a lot of togetherness now! That also means that with an entire year of not being able to sail with him, and uncertain prospects about getting a job back onboard I am tentatively starting to look at remote working opportunities. If anyone knows of anything let me know. 🙂

So, where are we going? I would love to meet the person that has any sort of answer to that question right now.

What I do know is that today has been a lovely sunny day in Scotland. We went for a walk down by the canal and didn’t even feel a drop of rain and that I think is a win.

Oh, and if you are from the US, remember to vote on Tuesday!
