Basic: Oh – you are trying to speak French? Let me make it easier for you and I will just speak English! Gah! As someone that speaks basic French being in France is about a 50/50 chance that you find someone that wants to help you learn, or someone that just wants to switch to English. Baguettes, cheese, wine, leisurely meals, and long walks along the Seine. France can be a completely magical place. Beautiful coastline and beaches. Very, very, very, busy with tourism in the summer, try to go somewhere off the beaten path then, and plan your visit to Paris, Marseille, and the Aix en Provence for spring or autumn.

Language: French! Oui, vous ne parlez pas en Francais? C’est d’accord. In all the major cities there are many English speakers.

Currency: The Euro! Watch out for the one euro and two euro coins as they really add up! Don’t think your random pile of change is just a few euros when it’s probably at least like 10.

Driving: The right side of the road. But, let’s be honest, you’ll take the train, ride a bike, or walk. You are too je ne sais quoi for a car or taxi.
